As he reminded me several times, Deputy Lyndon Trott has only spent 16 – now 18 - working days in post as the President of Policy and Resources, but he says a lot of work has already been done.
From drawing on current political expertise to populate his support team – Deputies St Pier and Parkinson on the Tax Sub-Committee – to turning the dial down on personality politics, Deputy Trott sat down with me for Express to go through his work so far, and his hopes for the rest of this term.
He told me that he won’t be standing down as Chairman for Guernsey Finance, that there is no immediate intention to part-buy Condor, and that there is still a lot of work left to do before the MoneyVAL inspectors come knocking.
He touched on the need for higher income tax, amendments to the Government Work Plan that may support the Transforming Education Programme, and a revitalised group that’ll think ‘only of housing’ from when they wake to when they sleep.
But most of all, Deputy Trott stressed how a successful 2022, and the surplus in cash it generated, could gift the island and its government some well needed breathing room.
“If I can achieve one thing, I will regard [my tenure] as success, and that is that when we go to the polls in June of 2025, the States are regarded as being a more cohesive unit... than it was in the autumn of 2023,” he said.
“If I've achieved that objective, then for me, that will be the best gauge of success.”
